Lei Day is a beloved annual Hawaii celebration held on May 1st (and often continuing on May 2nd) that honors Hawaiian culture, the "aloha spirit," and the art of making and wearing lei. Originating in 1927 and becoming an official holiday in 1929, the festival features lei-making contests, music, hula, and the crowning of a Lei Queen, with the motto "May Day is Lei Day in Hawaii".
